Useful information about copper

Copper is the only metal with a salmon pink colour. It is the only frosted material other than gold that is coloured. With a density of 8.9 kg/dm2 copper is a heavy metal, just like gold. Its melting point is at 1083 degrees Celsius and its boiling point is at 2595 degree Celsius. The characteristics of copper are its high thermal and electric conductivity.

More than 10,000 years ago, humans were already using copper. The name originates from the Romans: they called copper “aes cyprium” (ore from Cyprus). This later turned into the name “cuprum” which means “copper” in the German speaking countries today. Already at an early stage of our civilisation, copper was used to make tools, weapons and jewellery. During the centuries humans learned to better treat the metal and to deal with it in various ways e.g. hammering, heating, casting or alloying with other metals such as lead, silver, zinc or tin. The discovery of alloying copper with tin influenced an entire era, which was named after this discovery – the Bronze Age.
